I saw the mermaid

Tall tale of the sea

I saw the mermaid’s tail

Flip above the scudding surf

I saw her yet could not see

Show yourself to me

Elusive goddess of the waves

I’m sure I heard her whisper

Caught her breathless sigh

Nay mortal man

For you must catch me if you can

But never will you win

I saw the mermaid’s purse

Lying upon the shore

Abandoned

Empty

Shark egg case, known as a mermaid’s purse

She did grant no gift to me

No treasure to be worn

As token of true love

Then came to me pearl mother

Her face tight closed upon

Lustrous bead

Clinging as she was

To rock thrown clear

Above the water line

You seem distressed

Damsel

Allow me to assist

Your return to your own
