I Remember

The heart beats still

I remember...

The steady rhythm of your heartbeat

The lingering scent of your hair

The soothing warmth of your skin

The exciting spark of your caress

The sugary taste of your smile

The sparkling depth of your eyes

The honey smoothness of your whisper

The tight reassurance of your embrace

I can’t forget...

That jarring moment when naked reality

Returned in sharp unblinking contrast

Unclothed of ephemeral promise and transient hope

Shorn of the shimmering robes of ethereal fantasy

As we bury the past

Only haunted memories remain

The rejected offerings on the altar

The unanswered pleadings for mercy

I’m left with...

The diminishing footsteps of your colorless shadow

The fading echoes of the hollow promises

In the empty recesses of my soul

The heart beats still

Seeking hope to love

But sorrow sleeps in silence

And solitude

heartbreak
