I Often Wonder How I Got Here

Beginnings

I often wonder how I got here,

Knowing every minute decision played a part,

From the destiny of birth,

To matters that tickled my heart.

**

Every thought the possibility of a change in direction,

Seconds is all it takes to travel unplanned,

Crossing a new pathway, experiencing a new adventure,

Growing as my heart opens in an effort to expand.

**

I think back and study my memories,

Understanding a tiny tweak and all would have changed,

An alternate version of my life,

In which everything would be rearranged.

**

Everything happens for a reason,

Every meeting a lesson of some kind,

Every road travelled to reach a certain destination,

As each decision and choice is realigned.

**

Today’s thoughts pave the way,

Determining who I’ll be this time tomorrow,

Each night laid to rest at the end of the day,

Some ending in laughter and others in sorrow.

**

Every minute in a realm of magical change,

One choice away from success,

One decision from the possibility of disaster,

Turning the day into happiness or stress.

**

Nothing is set in stone,

And I know of the uncertainty of it all,

One mistake, one moment of wisdom,

Is all it takes to lift me up or see me fall.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

A wizened sense of self-awareness with a caution, promise & hope for what lies ahead.

  • Everything sure does happen for a reason and yes, nothing is set in stone. Loved your poem my friend!
