I Miss my Old Home

Top Story - June 2024

The sun sets over my new home

And I’m struck with an uncomfortable sense of longing.

It’s weird how my bed is the same;

The linen's flowers still smell the same,

But because the walls surrounding it aren’t,

They don’t comfort me the same.

Cords in my heart rusting away from disuse,

Now clank solemnly at my loss,

And tears soon glitter my lashes

And I hug my knees,

As I finally crack under and cry.

I miss my old home.

I want to be back home

Amongst the walls I know,

Amongst the walls that watched me grow up,

The walls that took in the banter and laughter of my friends

And stuffed up the outlets with memories.

I want to go back home.

I wipe my nose with a tissue from my new home,

And look up at the walls.

I’d chosen white- pristine white.

I regret it.

I wish I had at least chosen

The color of my old home.

I miss my old homes too, but I do love my new one as well. Nostalgic, T, and a big, albeit late, congrats on the lovely top story here.

Beautiful. The essence of who one is leaves a mark where they have been. I have left memories on many walls that have soaked up the ambiance of my soul and when that comfort is no longer there, it is disconcerting..especially in moments of sad reflections.

Take it one day at a time, and soon those walls will feel like home. I miss home too!

I felt this so deeply. The emotion of it threatens the back of my throat even now. Home. The place where we all find solace. Well penned and a great 'top poem' selection!

This is so relatable. I moved all the time growing up and I didn't have roots planted in any one place. I know how painful it can be to have to leave and start new. I have an adult child now and one not far from turning eighteen. We were able to give them roots. I've heard them talk about this fear and have seen it manifested in them. They don't want to leave. They feel as you do.As a mom, I worry about this, the lonilenss and heartache they may feel embarking out into the world on their own. Though I didn't have roots. I felt this strange emptiness in my apartments when I ventured away from my family. The quiet, the new, familiar and strange smells, though I was surrounded by familiar objects. Nothing looked or felt the same. I know from experience though that a new home eventually starts to feel like home, as time goes on, with effort and work, someday that new place will be hard to move away fom.

You've crafted an evocative, emotional, tender poem that feels at once raw and exposed and yet intimate and private. Congratulations on Top Story! 🥳 I especially loved your line: "tears soon glitter my lashes". Beautiful, original imagery.

  • Your evocative portrayal of longing and nostalgia beautifully captures the emotional weight of leaving a cherished place. The imagery and emotions conveyed are powerful and heartfelt, making the reader feel your sense of loss and yearning. Congratulations on being featured as a Top Story! I understand how you feel. I and my family had to move out of home that we grew up in and then kept moving a lot growing up. Just when it felt like home, we had to move again... But what is worse is having to move out of the country that felt like home.
