“I’m not like other girls”
A Black Girl Rendition

The girls who recycle captions, the ones who pretend to be deep
The girls who wear the same style, the ones who try to be chic
You’re right, I’m not like them
Their giggles are only half there, their fake smiles are weak
I smell it on their breathe, it’s empty when they speak
No you’re right, I’m not like them
And that’s where I stand, forever second choice
Because I refuse to blend in, and I refuse to lower my voice
Because my caption is always a paragraph long and my clothes aren’t plain enough
I’m not small and skinny, and sometimes I talk way too much
I laugh way too hard, and I smile even harder
I don’t do boring makeup and I don’t give a fuck for starters
I say what I want, and I eat what I want too
Surrounded by people or not, I always do what I want to
So you’re right, I’m not like them
Nor do I ever want to be, and if I’m not good enough for you, well
At least I’m good enough for me
If you want an empty girl or a tame girl
A superficial girl, or a plain girl
Just like the rest, nothing more than a “same” girl
A girl who’s barely there, who’ll probably float away because she’s only full of air
Then I’m not the girl for you, because my insides don’t compare
I’m filled with something like fire, and it burns in so many different hues
I can make you feel on top of the world and I can also make you sing the blues
And you know what, I get it, not everyone can handle someone like me
Some people just like plain coffee, while I’m a whole ass cup of tea
So like what y’all like, the saying is “there are plenty of fish in the sea”
And if you like fish that are all the same, then hey you’re in luck
Because there are very few out there that are anything like me
