I Loved You Like the Land

I loved you like the land loves snow— Soft and slow, with room to grow. You came when all the world was still, And I let you in against my will.

I Loved You Like the Land

The pines had warned me not to trust

A heart too quick to turn to dust.

But you, like June on frozen ground,

Brought life where none had yet been found.

I watched you by the fire's glow,

Your laughter melting all I know—

You didn’t need to speak to stay,

Your silence took my breath away.

I’m northern-born, and quiet too,

But every star I wished on knew—

If love could stretch across the skies,

It lived in you, behind your eyes.

So if you leave, take what you must,

But know I gave you more than trust—

I gave you wind, and flame, and rain…

And I would love you just the same.
