Before you took your first breath and I heard you cry
Before I wrapped my arms around you
Held on with all I had and sang you a lullaby
I loved you before you looked at me
And I saw myself reflected in your eyes
Before you stopped crying and just took me in
The one you knew, as you grew inside
I loved you before I saw your face
Ran my fingers through your auburn hair
Before I kissed your cheeks and hands
And thanked GOD with a whispered prayer
I loved you before I knew you
And I know you know its true
For while you formed inside my womb
You heard my heart beat just for you

My poetry collection Beautiful and Brutal Things is done. It's actually done and finally published over 270 pages. Over a year of my life went into this book. More than a year, really. Long days at my computer, sometimes seven days a week because I couldn't stop even when I probably should have. Then two months of editing that felt harder than the writing itself. But it's finished, and I'm still standing, and the book is real.
