I’ll Be Back
A Soldier’s Promise

Yes, I left on that jet plane
Though leaving you behind drove me insane.
When I tenderly kissed you goodby
I tried not to let you see me cry.
Your salty trickle I wiped softly away
I love you..I’ll be back.. All I could say.
Heart heavy, I caressed your silken cheek
Boarded the plane and headed to my seat…
As the engine revved and the jet taxied away
I peered from the window with nothing to say…
Seeking for but one last glimpse
Through crying skies misting drips.
Daily now I shoulder my arms
Knowing my duty keeps you safe from harm.
Though time and space, vast, lie between
I live for the day when again your face be seen..
Meanwhile my duty I shall perform best I can
As an American soldier here in the sand.
While I am gone count not the days
Instead each morning seek the sun’s rays
Each night look above at the lover’s moon
Knowing I shall be there soon.
Together once more we’ll stroll in moon’s light
When once is done this solder’s fight.
Nothing will keep this soldier from your side
Unless it be for my country I died
