I Just Keep Waking Up

and going to sleep and waking up

By Maia InnissPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

Every day I start by waking up

Every day I end by going to sleep.

One day I woke up and he was gone,

Too young to be gone.

But at the end of that day,

thousands of miles later,

I went to sleep.

And then I woke up.

Every day I keep waking up,

and every day I keep going to sleep.

Some days I wish I didn't have to sleep,

and some days I wish I didn't have to wake up.

One day I woke up and he was coming,

Before I went to sleep he was here.

So perfect,

I was made to see his first breath,

and be there when he woke up.

After a long day emptying my womb,

we went to sleep.

Some days are glorious and triumphant,

and other days are dark and scary to remember.

One day the potable water will be gone,

or my heart will be too heavy,

and I won't wake up,

or maybe I won't fall asleep,

but until then...

I will start every day by waking up,

and end every day by going to sleep.
