When I’m certain my heart is too weary
and I cannot bear the thought
of holding up its weight,
take my hand and lead me to calm waters
to see my reflection cascade
across the top of a river’s spun glass.
And after the wildlife have filled their bellies,
ladled their tongues, and craned their necks,
do not skip stones, frighten the fish,
or do anything else that might
inadvertently create a ripple effect.
Allow my image to drift on its own,
against the current and with the salmon,
while I grant my lungs their sweet release.
I am relieved to find peace,
and exhale my final breath.
Thank you for taking the time to read «I Go with the Salmon.» If you enjoyed it, I would love it if you took some time to read some of my other work.
