I Dreamed of Wolves

A Federal Worker's Rage

By K. G. Starke Published 9 months ago 1 min read

I screamed today, but you never heard a sound.

Every bleeding moment, my voice underwater.

I’m suffocating under a crooked smile.

But last night I dreamed of wolves; of the hunt my heart yearns for.

Under moonlight my sisters and brothers fought you.

Under burning stars they brought you to your knees.

I dreamed of wolves; they tore apart your toxic flesh.

With maws unfeeling, like the heartless blades you use on us.

They spit your body to the dust, unable to swallow your disease.

I dreamed of wolves; they sang the songs I wish I could.

When daylight breaks, again I’ll watch you tear apart my life, my passion.

I fear I’ll never sing again.

Yet fear won’t harness my beast.

In silence I shriek until my breath becomes a howl.

I’ll be waiting as sunset bleeds to night.

I’ll become the wolf of my dreams.

I’ll join my sisters and brothers in the song of a hunt.

As a pack we’ll howl above water.
