I Don’t Need You
"I Don't Need You" is a poem written about the characters 'Doubt' and 'Bold' - personifications of the two abstractions. The poem tells a part of the two characters' ongoing struggle, as well as speaking to the internal monologue of an individual who is in conflict with their own feelings of inadequacy.

“I don’t need you Doubt, you serve no purpose to me!
As a matter of fact, I’d like you to leave, please.
I have a feeling I’ll manage better on my own - You’ll see.
Need a hand getting out? Here, let me fetch you the keys.”
“But I’ve always lived here - am I not wanted anymore?
Are you sure about that?” Doubt stands to his full height.
Scared, you pause and remember you’ve tried this before.
“If anyone is leaving, you’re the one leaving tonight.”
“When was the last time you did something for me?
You cost me my job, some friends, and my peace.
Isn’t that enough? Can’t you just go and let me be?
Don’t you have someone else you can rob and fleece?”
“No!” Doubt says. “I like it here. Besides, who else knows
you as I do?” “Don’t I always tell what you’re capable of?
I saved you a lot of trouble! You’re just ungrateful, I suppose.
Like it or not, you need to listen to me!” Doubt gives a shove.
Taken aback, you stumble and rage, as a crescendo builds inside.
Then you remember - Doubt’s old master who reigned him in.
Quickly, you ask Bold for whatever assistance he could provide,
He hurriedly drives to the house, smiles, and steps within.
“You again?” He asks Doubt. (with a face that suddenly looks bored)
“Didn’t I ask you to leave before?” He questions sternly.
“Yes” whimpered Doubt from the corner to which he had retired.
“Well then, perhaps you better get going!” Bold said firmly.
Doubt races out the door, his face showing shame and defeat.
“He’s gone for now, but he’ll be back,” Bold says knowingly.
“But for the time being, I think my work here is complete.”
“Just don’t be ashamed of letting him get to you,” he says consolingly.
“He gets to everyone sometimes, It’s just in his nature -
and don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll meet again sooner or later”
