The man has a top job,
no dearth of salary,
responsibilities largely over,
all kids settled abroad
in well-placed lives.
Just the man and wife,
in empty nest,
you’d think
they must be happy,
domestic duties done,
life full of rest,
fun and relaxation.
But not so,
for there is,
always a backstory.
When he married,
he was very young,
and unemployed.
By family arrangement,
a landlord’s daughter,
a plain, barely-educated,
meek homemaker.
Now the man is somebody,
promoted in long tenure,
holds a high position.
She seems lowly,
he looks at her,
dismissively.
He thinks he deserved better,
a common human nature,
so he keeps distance.
The wife stayed in the house,
while he looks opportunities,
to stray,
in the name of duties,
continues his escapades.
Very sad,
but that’s the world,
beneath the mask of
all-is-well,
lots of ugliness
endless monkey business.
