I built you out of stone
And painted you with gold
Creating the image of what
I wanted you to be
A man who would lead me
Where I needed to go
I whispered my hopes and fears
Into your glimmering ears
Put all my trust in the thing
I built with my own hands
The thing that was you
But wasn't.
And when the ground shook,
I couldn't
Didn't want to
See you faultering.
It wasn't fair, really
You never asked me
To set up this crumbling altar
And bow before the wrong feet.
