I Am My Grandfather's Daughter

Remembrance

By Brandi Reyna/ Faith Butler Published 3 years ago 1 min read

I looked up to you for 21 years of my life.

From the moments you read to me as a child,

To the moments I snuck into your office and watched you hone your craft.

You called me nosy,

But you didn't realize,

I was really just observing,

Aware of the energy you put into the world,

The uniqueness of your intelligence and your personality.

When something or someone challenged you,

You never gave up,

You found a way to persevere and you persisted.

The age old adage of "I walked five miles to school in the snow"

was often told,

To build me up and to teach me to be grateful for what I have.

There are times in the 18 years since you have died,

Where I have found myself in a situation,

Needing to employ my MacGyver skills ,

In order to accomplish the task.

There have been times where I need to persevere

through the struggle, difficulty and heartache

and I remind myself,

I am my grandfather's daughter.
