Hummingbirds

A yard springing with Life

Watching from the window

Inching

Carefully

As not to spook

-

Sipping sweet sustenance

Iridescent emerald feathers

Ruby red throat

Long needle nose

Wings fluttering fast

Heart beating faster

-

Wind chimes sing

Dancing vibrations

Giant sunflowers

In garden boxes

-

Chipmunks and squirrels

They come along

Stuffing their cheeks

In an open field of green

With the mice and the coons

And a family of foxes

-

Days spent in the sun

Grampy tending

To the feeders daily

Inside, Bonnie tends to Nanny

While varieties of birds

Post up in numbers

-

Where Nanny once watched through the window adorned with inanimate dragonflies

-

She now rests on the mantle

Engraved with flowers and

A hummingbird

Author Notes:

Bonnie is my Godmother. She’s the glue that holds my family together. She’s been living at my Grandparents’ house since my Mom was young, and honestly, none of us would be where we are today if it weren’t for her undying love, emotional and financial support. She’s been such an integral part of our family, that when my cousin was little he asked his friends in class if their families had a Bonnie. When my Nanny (her best friend) got sick, she cared for her patiently, always by her side, never ceasing to muster up the physical and emotional strength to care for someone who was dying in front of her.

Grampy is getting older now that Nanny is gone, and now Bonnie looks after him. Soon, the big house, once teeming with life inside, will be empty, with nobody left but Bonnie and a collection of Urns.

And so my hope, is that life on the property will continue to prosper. Whoever is so lucky to have it when it is time, may they tend to the feeders daily, grow gardens, and watch the hummingbirds through their windows.

So beautiful! I got emotional reading this. You took me right to the window and I felt it all. I used to watch the hummingbirds with my grandmother and this struck a chord in my spirit. Thank you!
