How to Practice Empathy (A User Manual for When It’s Finally Personal)

Try it some time

By CadmaPublished about 5 hours ago 1 min read

1. Begin by assuming the pain is hypothetical.

It happens to others...distant others. People you were told made bad choices. People you don’t know. People you don’t have to imagine.

2. If a story makes you uncomfortable, label it political. If a body is harmed, ask what they did wrong first?

This is Step One: protect yourself from feeling.

3. When someone cries, check whether they voted like you.

If not, proceed to Step Four: scroll past.

4. Practice saying “That’s unfortunate, but…” The but is important. The but builds walls. The but keeps you clean.

5. Ignore statistics. Ignore history. Ignore the parts where you benefit. Empathy is easier when consequences have not learned your name.

6. Continue until the thing happens anyway.

7. It will arrive quietly... in a hospital bill, a school notice, a job termination email, a body that suddenly needs care, a law that doesn’t ask who you voted for.

8. Notice how fast the language changes. Now it’s confusing. Now it’s unfair. Now it’s not what you meant. Now it’s “why isn’t anyone helping?”

9. This is the moment. Do not look away!

10. Sit with the ache you once outsourced. Feel how heavy it is when it lives in your chest instead of someone else’s headline?

11. Realize too late but still breathing? empathy was never a reward. It was a muscle. You chose not to use it until it atrophied and then screamed.

12. Practice retroactively. Think of the people you dismissed. The warnings you mocked. The lives you called exaggerated.

13. Understand this…suffering does not check party lines. Consequences do not recognize slogans.

Systems do not pause for exceptions.

14. If you feel anger now, good.

If you feel fear, stay with it.

If you feel grief, do not numb it with blame.

15. Congratulations!! You have located empathy.

16. Next ti…..try starting here…

before it’s your turn.
