"How can you not be angry?"

The struggles and heartaches lead to our purpose

By Jam Like BamPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

Your body, your freedom, your choice, your safety, your health, your happiness, your life, your soul.... they are NOT for sale.

I sold my soul for the illusion of love and an unsafe home.

I paid for it with pieces of self respect, identity, body, friendships, and truly anything was on the table.

Can you relate?

To anyone out there still in the cycle, I need you to hear me:

7 years ago I left that abusive relationship.

For the last time.

I remember the feeling I had the last moment walking out of that house that we made a home together.

It was the moment I realized the power of my choice.

Choosing to leave then, was the bravest thing I could have done.

People who have heard my story, ask me, "how can you not be angry?"

I was.

The entire 3 years that I chose fear of leaving over fear of staying.

I was angry.

I betrayed my self over and over.

I chose everything else but me.

It almost killed me.

So I chose different.

I chose me.

And how could I possibly be angry at the version of me who said NO MORE?

She was hurt, alone, lost... but she was brave.

And I'm not angry that she didn't know better... until she did.

And I'm not angry for how someone else treated me.

Because that gifted me the opportunity to learn to treat myself the way I deserve to be treated.

I set the bar high.

7 years later, I am certain that heartache led me to my purpose.

So I'm not angry.

I'm grateful.

Not a single piece of my soul, body, or life is for sale.

And my heart has never been so whole.
