Horrid nightmares of what once was.

I remember it, all too well.

I remember the daylight creeping on the eastern horizon,

The sound of the song birds fluttering at the break of dawn.

I can recall the dew droplets lightly tapping upon the soil,

As the spring harvest can to its full abundance.

I remember the rise of the shopkeeper's toil as the rooster would call,

And our herds and flock never failed to bear their fruit.

My memory serves me well.

I can even visualize the memory of children scurrying around the market,

While the young women continued their search for a suitor.

I remember when love flourished all the more,

As our toil and lives were blessed.

I remember working the soil day and night,

Cheerful and hopeful, never worried about what could be...

Until the sounds of war and blood came upon our lands,

Like a swarm of locusts eager to devour all that we had.

An army of barbarians marched onto our borders,

And like an overwhelming plague of devourers,

They destroyed and devoured all that we had.

I remember the flames of fire on my face with the screams in my ears,

Their swords in hand with their leather skins covering their torsos,

While the men were butchered, and the women defiled.

The children slaughtered like livestock for an offering.

I, remember, my wife...

My children...

I remember a time, when the days were prosperous, and happy,

When I had all taken in an instant,

With my future left to the dust and ash of the fire...
