Home.

A cup of tea a day keeps the doctor away

Home for me was a combination of things.

The sound of song my twin brother would sing,

It included the smell of fresh food my mother would cook,

My tonnes of literature and reading books,

Stacked in my room, next to photos in a frame,

Of all the people and pets and loved ones I could name.

The feeling of love is what home was for me,

Or simple acts of kindness like my mum making me a cup of tea.

She’d knock on the door and pop her head round,

“Cup of tea, my lovely?” Her voice gave off a beautiful sound.

Home for me was the little things that meant a lot,

A feeling of peace as my mum poured from the tea pot.

Home for me was the laugher and joy.

My twin brother gave me that, the opposite of me but simply a boy.

His laugh fills me with smiles and warmth and bliss.

These are the things that moving out made me miss.

Home for me now is still about people and acts from the heart,

But for me this is the beginning of a brand new start.

My partner brings me peace of mind and glee,

He is my home away from home, that’s what he is to me.

Home to me is the people around,

A new home in my partner I have found.

My family showed me that kindness is key,

They belong in my hearts and are always here for me.

When I need a feeling of my original home, all I have to do is simply pick up the phone.

Ring, ring! Ring, ring! My mother picks up,

I smile and say “Hello!” As I grip my tea in a cup.

Home to me now is my boyfriend,

Sometimes though it is hard to pretend.

I do miss my first home, my mother and brother.

But my partner ensures I am able to discover.

That I can have two homes, one with my family, one with him.

Now I keep this knowledge deep within.

Anytime I’m feeling blue, my boyfriend knows all I need is a cup of brew.

He’d knock on our door and pop his head round,

“Cup of tea, my lovely?” His voice gave off a beautiful sound.

I’d feel the happiness and warmth radiate inside of me,

Because home to me, kindness is key.

It helps me think of the acts of love that would be done by my mother.

And who could forget my lovely twin brother.

Home to me is the acts of kindness and people too,

So…….what is Home to you?
