The first step is hard.

My backpack gives and then takes.

Forward? Yes, I say...

*

Some urge to map it.

Sun on horizon; cold grows.

Backward? Not a chance.

*

Darkness around me.

Sound and motion build all fears.

What dark shape is that?

Or something else...

The first step is always the hardest but we must keep going!

  • Sorry I missed this first time round , excellent words

I like how the opening and lines sets seal the mood for both readings, and the difference your attitude makes, especially when frightened!

  • Your poem reads well both ways!

  • Is this for the Inverse challenge? Because it reads so well both ways! Loved your set of Haikus!

This is exactly what I like to do, get lost in nature - showed perfectly.

There are many ways to read into this...and it made me do some thinking....thank you, Kendall!

  • So much said with so few words! “ Darkness around me. Sound and motion build all fears. What dark shape is that?”

  • Almost a hint of "The Blair Witch Project" in here. With the Asian influence of the haiku/senryu format, we could blend it with "The Forest" U& really have something spooky & surreal going here.

Good one! The haiku is a form that I have wrestled with, but never properly subdued. I envy those who have.
