Her Name is Maya
A Tribute Poem for Maya Angelou 1928-2014

She made her way with her intelligence, boldness, and grace
This woman is special
She has a name
And her name is Maya
Born as the name, Marguerite Annie Johnson
at Saint Louis in the state of Missouri
Raised in Stamps, Arkansas
Suffering from parents calamitous separation
Raped and abused by the hands of her mom's boyfriend
Murdered by the hands of her uncles
Kept her lips sealed shut
Shut like a locked door with no key
Depression-era South to Rich era
Turning life into a journey
Her life was dependable
A daring writer,
A poetic preacher,
She was and always remain our Phenomenal Woman
She lived her potential life
Until she left to be in a better place
Going to see her family and her brother face to face
We cried,
The whole world cried,
She marked her territory
Leaving behind Her poems, Her stories, Her legacy
She rises above the heavens above from mortality to immortality
She will be forever Eternity
They'll remember your name
What's her name?
Her name was Maya.
