Hello stranger

I just met you, so understand

That I have no obligation to you

No obligation to trust you

No obligation to care for your heart

Because I must protect mine first

Hello stranger

Please understand

I will look at you with distrust

I will not take in your words

I will examine them and you

For reason to hide or protect myself

Hello stranger

Understand that before this

I thought you were easy to discern

That people are what they appear to be

But time and experience has taught me

To be skeptical of human intentions

Dear stranger

Don't misunderstand

If you're good, if you're true

Please be patient, I will see

And if you cannot be patient

Just go, I will remember you fondly
