Heavy as Skin

What should be done about the memory of slavery?

By Skyler SaundersPublished 7 years ago 1 min read
A sculpture of the black woman

When will be the day

Where all colors unite,

And everyone will say

That there be a day and night?

A time to remember the brutal

Reality of slavery told true,

Where forgetting would be futile

And every moment held close to you.

The tightly woven tales

Of cities made of bone

Amongst the sharks and whales

In the Middle Passage zone.

So, a day and night to reflect

Would spark new thought.

Instead of trying to deflect

All people will remember who fought.

Memory as heavy as skin should fuel this date.

All ideas are welcome and when it gets here, don’t be late.
