Heart and Home
Where I belong

The word home fills my heart with warm fuzzies,
Because home is my haven, it’s where I belong,
The place I’m free to be authentically me,
And when I’m sad, it’s the place in which I long.
**
Home is within my son’s belly-hurting laughter,
It’s within his smile when I come into sight,
In his warm hugs of hello and the safety of his thoughts,
And it’s in his heartfelt “I love you”, it’s where it feels right.
**
Home is in the purr of my little ginger feline,
It’s in her ‘biscuits’ that she kneads upon my lap,
Her warmth as she nestles close when I lay in slumber,
And it’s in her safety and security when she trusts me to nap.
**
Home is in my big sister’s emails,
In her name as it flashes across my screen,
It’s in the heart warming videos she sends that make me smile,
And in her support and love and our family gene.
**
Home is in my love of quiet solitude,
The time when I can relax in silence and peace,
The joy of taking time out to recoup and regather,
And any opportunity I find to release.
**
Home is in a warm stranger’s smile,
Or in an acquaintance’s unexpected kind deed,
A text message from a kind soul just met,
And the offer of a helping hand when in need.
**
Home is a unadorned comment under my words,
An effort to read that of which I write,
An appreciation for my thoughts scrolled in black and white,
A gifted light that reaches across so bright.
**
Home is the dawning of a new day,
A gift from the Universe to show me I’m blessed,
The chorus of bird songs that shimmer the airwaves,
Home is my life in which I’m generously dressed.

This poem has been written as part of Sahil Patel's Lifeline's poetry prompts on Medium.
Today's prompt is: Write a poem that talks about what 'home' means to you. Use your senses, feelings, and memories to show what makes a home special. Think about things like the cosy feeling of being with loved ones, the familiar sights and sounds, or the sense of belonging. Make it personal and heartfelt.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
