Oh Icarus, son of Daedalus,

The world has been unkind to you.

Stories have been carved from your death,

and your lessons have been taught to the folly youths.

You have become the tale of a child

who could have been but never will be.

****

I wonder,

As you fluttered to the heavens and fell to the earth,

as the wind caressed your falling body

and your heart forgot its steady rhythm.

As your voice echoed for help,

knowing the end is soon to come,

did you regret flying and wished you never flew?

****

Well don't, dear boy!

Everyone has been there.

So, don't feel lonely.

We have all dreamt of touching the stars

and exceeding all human boundaries.

We have glued our wings with the sweat

of constant rejections, early mornings I-will-never-give-up,

blue-mooned successes, and fairy-tale expectations.

Yet, like you, the heat from the sun melted them away!

****

I don't judge you and I never will.

You are not a fool for dreaming beyond your capabilities.

So don't be scared to fall.

Smile at the ever-growing distant sun

Touch the wind with your palm

and scream out loud,

"I was only a boy that flew!"
