I glance out across

the vast expanse,

the messy wilderness.

Scattered objects,

stones and mud.

Wiping sweat from my brow,

I shield my eyes

from the glaring sun.

No sound, but a light scratching,

as though off in the distance.

Still, I watch,

unwilling to disturb the calm.

Heads are bowed,

eyes downcast,

pencils moving.

Students working quietly.
