Harbinger

a poem

By Ava MackPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 1 min read
Mujer angel, Desierto de Sonora by Graciela Iturbide

A bird painted against the sky

Unbounded by balance and flight

Creates a tipping point of earth and air

A gulf I, the bird, fill with my unbound raven hair

Left hand, fallen hand, steady me.

Reaching, curious, exploring hand holding me

and the world up

Tell me,

was it your steadiness or curiosity that outcasted us?

Right hand, righteous hand, free me.

To make music, or rather, the possibility of

creating something from nothing hand

Tell me,

was it your endless possibilities for beauty that kept us holy?

I arrive in my own time, my equatorial waist encircles mountains

I interrupt the horizon, with downcast eye and gauntlets fastened

Consult your augurs, I am the harbinger of destruction

Casting a fiery shadow across the bone-dry Earth

The fissure running through the very center of the universe

I could be, but instead,

I bring you music
