HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY...
So I look at this house
Ramshackle, seemingly hostile, dank, musty..
I see through the eye of memory, my sisters..
So foolish in their laughter and talk..
Like birds gathered in meeting in their treetops..
The house is worn,
Tired but refusing to fall.
I think of the many times you made your walk..
From the bus to the house on tired legs..
But never really stopped..
Came home from work..
Made dinner for us,
Unquestioning and uncomplaining..
Cuz that's who you were.
So I just want to thank you..
For what you gave me..
The things you taught me..
I thank you for my children,
For my grandchildren..
(they would have loved you, you know).
For my nieces and nephews..
Thank you for the great food you made for us..
For all the little things we never got to tell you we appreciate..
Most of all..
Thank you for making this old, ramshackle, dank, musty house..
A home.
It's a wonderful house..
Thank you.
