Hands Off Approach in Medicine

What 21st century healthcare has wrought upon us

By Judith HarrisPublished 2 years ago 1 min read

Algorithms applied to flesh and blood,

Bequeath methods that are supposed to be good.

Clinicians who rely on them do not need to think.

Digital treatment is trusted to a computer link.

Equation outcomes appear at their best,

Formulated to prescribe procedures, pills, and tests.

Graduated calculations are dictated by code and theory.

Health no longer rests on intricate human query.

Imagination and intuition no longer take part,

Justifying treatment as skill married to art.

Knowledge of medicine, unlike days of old,

Leans on technology, AI, I’ve been told.

Money, the carrot for industry's sake

Nudges approved standards to take,

Often adjusted, published, and displayed,

Promising marketing of health fears allayed.

Quality living in a capsule ensconced,

Radiant futures in ads stealthily launched.

Suspicious, we’re not of falsehoods unseen,

Trusting this science of average and mean.

Unaware of programs the health system has made,

Venturing forth to assure it gets paid.

What manner of care is new predilection?

Xeroxing, templates, drop-down menu selection.

Yes, medicine has evolved! So, the scientists gloat.

Zero personalization in a white coat.
