"Habitation" by Margaret Atwood

Habitation by Margaret Atwood

In the back, we crouch outside and eat popcorn.

The edge of the receding glacier

We are grateful to have made it this far, despite the suffering.

We are learning how to make fire.

Margaret Atwood, best known for her chillingly realistic dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale, exhibits comparable abilities in this poem. 'Habitation' is strikingly realistic. For perspective, Atwood concedes to the difficulties of marriage and understands the effort required to overcome them. The poem's beauty stems from its sincerity.
