Guitar Sonnets
Practicing rhymes while he practices bar chords
I.
I love the sounds you make when you rehearse
Your voice, a second focus, light and lithe,
Your fingers pluck the strings with growing ease,
The chords with sweet mistakes are beautiful.
You play a note, a chord, a chorus, verse,
Then play the chord again, again – such drive
Is not a push, nor force, but like the breeze
Your practice is both dance and dutiful.
And then a stop, wrong note, a quiet curse,
You curl your fingers in a way that I’ve
Not seen before, or felt, but know would please
That part of me that wants you – wants to pull
You close to me, on top of me, and then
To give you back to your guitar again.
II.
I love the sounds you make with your guitar
Your fingers pluck the strings with growing ease,
The chords with sweet mistakes attract and please
The music better every day by far
Your voice, a second focus, soft and light,
Is sweet to me like honey in my ear.
I close my eyes so I can better hear,
And lose myself in list’ning every night.
And every night my favorite part by far,
More lovely than the music that you play,
The best part of the end of every day
Is hearing how excited, dear, you are.
My favorite song to hear my lover play ---
Whichever one he’s proudest of today.
III.
My darling, playing one of your guitars
At breakfast and before we go to bed,
You play a minute at a time for hours.
Your melodies are stuck inside my head.
My darling, with guitar across your waist,
You play and I learn more of you each time
I get a whole new song or just a taste,
The secrets of your soul float by in rhyme.
And even when, my darling, your guitar
Sits silent on its stand, reliably
You’re humming, singing, whistling, always are –
Your soul in soundwaves still surrounding me.
My darling, it’s been music all along –
I’ve met and memorized you through your song.
