Growing Pains

death and rebirth of the self

We remember the pains

Of yesterday

So much so,

we'd rather not change

Cause to take that path

Would rearrange

Everything we've built,

strangers we remain.

No more broken hearts

cause we've built our walls.

And the ones who fought,

well, we watched them fall.

Said they walked away--

so our pain recalls--

yet we look around

No one's there at all

So when is it ME

That I wish to see

On the other side

Of life's tragedy

When do I accept

That I hold the key

To shape these limbs

On my family tree

To surround myself

With the greatest gifts

And my favorite one?

Well, you call it wits.

I like solving puzzles

Never calling it quits

You can beat me down

but I will not break

I will sit in puddles

of our mistakes

I'll let my eyes bleed

Till the fever breaks

I will heal it all

Whatever it takes

I will speak my truth

Allow my voice to shake

Cause I am the artist

Of what I co-create

So pardon me

If you find me distant

I seek the truth

The desire is persistent

“Tune everything out!”

It's very insistent

No more asking politely

For your permission

Let my actions show

who I really am

Try taking the lead

Be humble if you can

“Happy little accidents”

Allow you to expand

To take you beyond what

you thought you could stand

I'll deal with my shit

cause it's okay

To sit with it

and send the pain away

Feel what you feel

And don't delay

More than you must

To mend the fray

Take deep breaths

It's okay you're not okay

Just be cautious of your thinking

and get out of your own way
