Grilled Corn

I want you and all your history

By Claire Nagy-KatoPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

Sexy

Juicy

Fat

Wet

Crunchy --

Grilled Corn

Summer fling is here

And I am not torn

For I am on a date

with Grilled Corn

You’re in my hands

It’s obvious this is fate

You charred yellow oblong bus

Get in my mouth, not a moment to wait

Luscious fat cobs

Smothered in cultured butter

This saintly combination

Chokes me, makes me stutter

Thinkers may dream

But feelers eat grilled corn

Sugary starch drip from my lip

Sweet sensations from tip to tip

I chomp --

Shiny white threads burst

From the seams of my teeth

My head bobs back and smiles

Like I used to care to please for a while

You are supersweet and yellow

But when did the purple blue and orange

Get lost to this fine fellow?

Just 80 years ago

Geneticists wanted know

How corn seeds

Might be affected by

Nuclear radiation so

They shipped them off to Bikini Atoll

And BOOM goes the atomic bomb!

Thank you “god”!

We turned starch to sugar

In that beautiful seed pod

Supersweet, available in yellow and white!

Screw the colors

Set the standard

Sweet corn is now the afternoon delight!

Corn I do love you so

But your history is dark dear

Indigenous sweets were never sweet enough

For our white man’s heart to revere

And just like a bomb

The effects never disappear

The grilled char on a corn’s ear

Brings us back the color of black

Something we have lost our love for

We send it into our hearts and stomachs and mouths

And we get something more

Than a colorless corn

We get a blessing of life past blight

And nourishment without scorn

So then how do we come back to love?

Without strife and being impolite, well

We stop thinking and start feeling

Take a bite, let it drip down your face

And say, damn corn, what’s your family like?
