Grief and Villains

A poem about how grief has led many to their own downfalls, their own villainy.

Good grief

That's all I can think about somedays

Days I am reminded of all the precious things

The precious people that were ripped from my life

Leaving me shattered, and confused

I started to realize how over the years

I sympathize with the villains of every story I read

Every show I watch

For the broken and defeated characters

Who turned to evil because they lost something precious

I let out a heavy sigh

And mumble good grief once more

Grief that has led me to the same conclusions

Burn the world down so everyone feels my pain

But all those villains wanted was someone to understand

Grief made the world my enemy

I promised to reshape the world in grief’s bleak and bloody image

It's the most admirable devotion to grief in a way

Contrasted to a hero’s love, and commitment to duty, to honor

Oh, but the poor Hero can never do any wrong

They always rise above the challenge, rise above the loss

And we love the heroes for it, but condemn the villains for the same

As if the villains don't embody the very essence of humanity at its core

More than the courage and bravery of the hero ever could

Show me the real essence of grief

Show me the destruction of your soul after losing a loved one

Show me the descent into madness

Show me how much you loved, and that very love became grief

The grief that tears everyone apart all the same

Grief holds the loudest voice at every loss

Even love remains silent while the cries are heard

The woes, the moans, the wailing echoing throughout time

Asking only to be heard, to be understood.

I love the approach you took to explain that the villains are in essence victims of their grief, and not just evil for evil’s sake. Very relatable for those of us who have lost loved ones and have gotten into this mind space. Well done!

This is a poignant poem, and yours is a valuable insight: grief and pain can make empathetic imaginative projection into the predicament of another, even a rogue and peasant slave or diabolical villain, all too easy.
