Green

And I smile

I see dandelions dance in the breeze,

Delicately shaking off their fluffy white hats,

To reveal their golden locks.

And I see green.

-

I hear a robin’s melodious chirp,

As he hops along a shimmering blanket of emerald,

Searching for a tasty meal.

And I see green.

-

I see buds sprouting on the trees,

Stretching, unravelling themselves to the welcome sun.

Their lifeblood newly restored.

And I see green.

-

I smell the bloom of lilac bushes.

Their delicate floral scent a welcome change,

From the must of melting snow.

And I see green.

-

It’s been a long, unforgiving winter

Of blustery whites, dull greys and dirty browns.

Bone chilling arctic winds

Cut through to my core.

-

Glacial water freezes on my lashes.

The bitter sting of cold burns my cheeks.

My scowl as permanent,

As the January frost.

-

But now, I hear a robin’s sweet, sweet song.

I watch dandelions dance in the breeze,

And finally, I smile.

Because now, I see green.

sometimes in a story or poem there is a line that speaks to me beyond the rest (to others as well, and sometimes not). "From the must of melting snow" is the line in this piece. I listen to the sounds of it and notice the meanings hidden and obvious and its connection with the life of green...this is a beautiful line of poetry. Truly.
