Glory

Hair

" I would die for your hair."

That's what someone told me today.

So my hair is a very low maintenance part of me. I've forgotten to put new shampoo in the shower, and am perfectly fine using my body wash on my hair. I cut it myself without any fear of making a mistake with it, because it's just hair.

When I started noticing grey hairs, I dyed it for a brief time. Brief, because it grows so fast that it was pointless and I just decided to let it do its thing. It's just hair. I've had it pixie short and very long and everywhere in between over the years, and have donated it to Locks of Love for human-hair wigs for chemo patients or people born with Alopecia, and so have no hair. Human-hair wigs are cooler and can be cared for like regular hair, and look and feel just like a full head of hair. They require ponytails of 10 inches for the wig making, but if you donate less than 10 inches they sell it to offset the cost of making the wigs. Different organizations may have different restrictions, but Locks of Love doesn't accept bleached hair. It's a great cause and a great feeling to put those ponytails into ziploc bags to mail them off, a chance to give someone hair again.

I started reading the Bible in 2022, and I was enamored with the idea of Mary wiping Jesus' feet with her hair, so I decided to let my hair grow long enough to wipe His feet.

“Then Mary took a pound of very costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.”

‭‭John‬ ‭12‬:‭3‬ ‭NKJV

This woman said she'd die for my hair, and that if she had to shorten her life to have hair like mine, she would. I told her I wouldn't let her die for it, so I offered to cut it off and give it to her to make a wig, and she stared at me for a few seconds and almost started crying. I would have cut it off right then and there, because to me it's still just hair. I think she was startled by someone willing to give her something so freely. Had I thought that I could change her life with my hair, I would have cut it off right then and there.

But maybe I can change her life best by letting her know that she is seen. She is heard. And she is treasured. That she is beautiful just the way she is, because God made us in His image. He knows the number of hairs on her head, because He created her.

“But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her; for her hair is given to her for a covering.”

‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭11‬:‭15‬ ‭NKJV

Your story made me start to think. Those are the best kind. I was thinking of how long Mary took to grow her hair. (I am supposing that the women probably didn't get haircuts often, if at all back then? And I was thinking about the very first curls that baby Mary had and when as a young woman, she recognized the transitioning time from a teen to what it meant to be a woman. Using her hair to humble herself with all her past, present, and future and recognizing that Jesus had been with her every step of the way...she gave a complete surrender and gave her very best (and expensive) oil to worship Him...all I could say was, "WOW."
