you said that you felt like one,
& I thought it made sense:
there is something to all this that leaves one
feeling neither here nor there
& incapable of doing what we used to,
between states of being.
we haunt our own homes,
it’s true—
opening and closing cupboards without purpose,
moving from one room to the next
just for something to do,
sighing and groaning in our lonely rooms,
restless and stuck and not knowing for how long.
and when I see you—
whenever that may be—
we might appear spectral to one another,
unreal & unbelievable & unsure.
you look like you’ve seen a ghost, I’ll say,
though your face will be happy & bright,
not pale & frightened,
and we’ll laugh,
we two ghosts returned to life.
