Future Perfect

The man who was never there

There was a man who lived his life

distant, dispossessed.

In his mind he worried, wondered

why he was depressed.

He lingered in a yesterday,

never felt quite right.

Future perfect, saccharine dreams

kept him awake at night.

He prayed to God,

‘My life is hell, can’t you please help me?’

God said ‘I do, most every day

but you’re not able to see.

I am the lungs with which you breathe,

the moon, the stars, the sun.

I am the warmth, your lover’s touch,

I am a child’s fun.

I’m all these things, I’m everything,

the beauty in a day.

And I’m in you as you’re in me

and we are here to stay.

I shout this at you every day,

scream, "I’m everywhere!"

But you don’t see and you don’t hear

because you’re never there.'
