Fruitcake

Why do people dislike fruitcake?

I find it yummy in my tummy.

Candied fruit is not my favorite,

And is never added to anything I bake.

None in my cookies or cake; I won’t add it to what I bake!

The German Stollen or Italian Panettone cannot compare.

It’s just sourdough bread spattered and splashed with a

mixture with candied zest and peel, and perhaps almonds.

BREAD -

It’s bread.

Americans jazzed up recipes, adding pineapple, papaya, and cherries,

packing it tight and sweetening it up, festively

and sweetly satisfying

the American sugar addiction.

Fruitcake covered in pecans or walnuts.

I cut it and the flat slice screams at me

BUTTER,

add a bit of butter.

You might like Stollen, but it’s bland to me -

even with butter, I don’t agree

with the people who find Stollen tasty.

Some still won’t like fruitcake,

but try it with butter or a small

chunk of sharp cheese.

Fruitcake lasts quite a while; longer than Stollen.

Fruitcake is loaded with calories.

Never you mind, add

a tiny smear of butter -

so sublime.

Some fruitcake is made with liquor

but I’ll pick the regular and

use a dot of butter.
