Frozen hearts

I didn't breathe a word

I didn't breathe a word of it,

thinking to change its fate.

If I won't give it thought or mind,

perhaps it'll dissipate.

*

I buried it beneath my heart,

where it won't ever be felt.

And froze over it an ice so cold,

it won't ever dare to melt.

*

I glazed it over with a smile,

though it hurt my cheeks so much.

and built around me so many walls,

so no one would breach to touch.

*

I didn't ever melt the tears

out of their frozen state.

And when words threatened to impart warmth

I didn't take the bait.

*

To allow comfort to penetrate

is to begin the journey to heal.

But, then I'll be forced again

to allow myself to feel.

*

So, every tear that threatened

was iced over the glaze.

And every emotion still felt

was forced into haze.

*

With every year gone by,

I further encrypted the code.

I didn't realize it heats to lava

and eventually explodes.
