Just around the turn of spring
He said, "I love you".
I was happy.
Then, a chill wind blew in
Like the wicked witch of the north
The fire which once cackled - froze to ice
embers dying.
A broken heart's first frost
brings a whispered Chill
silent, sudden, and irreversible.
It creeps in overnight,
turning tenderness brittle,
and memories into frozen petals
that shatter at a touch.
- The first frost settled in...no scream
heartbreak doesn’t always shout loudly,
it crystallizes slowly over everything once warm.
- Love, like autumn leaves, still clings to the branches -
but the frost makes them fragile,
ready to fall with the slightest wind.
A sudden freeze clutches - breakable
even beauty - it whispers
can be undone by cold.
Even love can be undone by silence.
Both are thresholds -
between warmth and absence,
between what was
and what will never be again.
Such do we vow...
Until the next time, when heart sings
Amidst first frost's return.

"Love, like autumn leaves, still clings to the branches" I felt this line in my core!
This was so sad, but so beautifully written. I love your poem.
Well-wrought! The analogy of frost with the onset and endurance of heartbreak really resonates well.
So sad and emotional and so wonderfully descriptive.
This was so sad yet so beautiful. Loved your poem!
That captured first frost beautifully, sadly...poignantly, Novel.
The rhythm in your writing makes it feel almost cinematic.
Beautiful, very beautiful. The truth of a frozen heart is something that is better to leave behind.
