from the fire and the sea
a poem on love and fear and loss

your soul met mine like fire
all wild and new and free
with hope in our eyes, we lit the sky
and let joy take the lead
~
your hand held mine like a deep root
from a wise old tree
slow and safe and tall
your arms made a home for me
~
your love rose in me like the slow tide
a cool rush past my feet
with a pull, deep and vast and real
you took me back to the sea
~
but fear slid in with a roll and a roar
a buzz that hung in the air
hair on end, I ran and hid
and with a lie on my lips, said I did not care
~
my time with you was sun
but I only saw the rain
you made a home to keep me safe
but I only saw a cage
~
now time has come to take you
as slow, you slip away
all I'm left are what ifs
and an ache to see your face
