From My Yesterdays

A Coal Camp Childhood

From My Yesterdays

It’s often said by scholars and layman alike,

That we are who we are because of our sight.

Some are able to see, while others only capture a glimpse,

Of what life really is before a life that is spent.

Once only a child, I scampered along,

With brothers upon coal dirt roads back home.

Was a far better time than now I see,

Filled with laughter, smiles, and gaiety.

With hopeful hearts we slumbered and slept,

While life played its games hiding our futures that it kept,

But, once awakened and almost grown,

We each took our separate roads, our destinies alone.

There’s no harm in remembering separation in time,

Where dreams of life, love, and family were so sublime.

Yet, within my heart of hearts I lay prostrate in tears,

Knowing that those minutes, those hours, now lay lost in years.

Come stand beside me as I turn once more,

To raise my hand, to look, to see, to remember without disgrace,

For I have fought a good fight as best as I knew how,

Giving back to those I met knowing my trust was not misplaced.

In time it’s said I too I will assume my place,

Beyond this passage of time with its memories that I cannot escape.

For me, like others who’ve ascended on high,

My tomorrows will become my yesterdays and I will cease to say good-bye.

But from those yesterdays filled with my life,

I’ve found the faith that will more than suffice.

For beyond the remaining mountains set before me I see,

A home, a family, and a place for me.
