From A Titanic Passenger
A Taylor Swift-Inspired Poem
So long, London! I’m off to sea!
Bound to New York from South Hampton,
A new life surely awaits for me.
So long, London.
A liner fit for a sultan,
A ship of dreams they say is she,
All are awed by her abundance,
E’en us of lesser pedigree.
Off on she that can’t be sunken,
I’m to the land of the free.
So long, London.
Even before hearing it, I knew this song would be a sad one. I've been a Taylor Swift fan long enough to know how she tends to choose her track fives and her breakup with Joe Alwyn had been all over the place when it happened. I tried to write these pieces just off of the titles, divorced from anything I knew about the artist or the context in which the album was coming out.
I'm a bit of a nerd about shipwrecks, and the Titanic was a big starting point for that, especially growing up in Nova Scotia and then living in Halifax as an adult. I've gone back and forth on whether I like this poem or not, but I do think I like that I made it seem very hopeful, despite how we know that voyage will end.

Hello??? The sultan and abundance slant rhyme 😭😭 I am so obsessed
Love the song!
But the thing is, I don't know how she moved on so quickly and got into a relationship with Travis Kelce. I say this because I always feel second hand emotions for people and I still hadn't moved on from her break with with Joe Alwyn 😅😅 Loved your poem!
Thoughts of a journey well-captured!
I feel you captured the emotions a passenger must have felt upon boarding this luxury ship. I’m glad you shared this poem
