dad always flashed fried the fresh cat-fish tail he caught in the streams

And saved it for me

I loved it

Like a potato chip

Crunchy

Salty and crisp

Chewy and bitter

Cat-fish tail is all mine

He never asked, no one else would have it

He just saved it for me

Knowing I was like a mermaid

Changing from his daughter

Into a strange situation

Into a conversation about strange things

Flipping through odd magazines

I stole from him,

Only meant for the male gaze…

Trying on Dad’s button up tops to wear at school

And yes,

He always saved me that cat-fish tail

Like a mermaid tail

Knowing I was the only one who could appreciate it.
