Fox Socks

It is the season for celebrating the sock in all its varied patterned glory and today, I am showcasing a particular favourite of mine

I have a pair of socks

Patterned with the fox:

Let's call them "fox socks".

*

A poem is insightful.

These socks I find delightful.

I need to wax lyrical

About this pair of socks!

*

I don't like wearing socks

My feet enjoy the air

Of a truly trusty pair

Of well-machined flip flops.

*

But when, the cold, it comes

My toes hate getting numb

And also hate the wet

And so with some regret,

I choose another shoe

As sandals just won't do.

*

The sock has risen to eminence

Through Winter's predicted presence.

*

I have a lot of socks

Patterned ones and plain:

Some have coloured blocks;

Some may cause disdain.

Who cares?

Flamingoes, palm trees

Campervans -

Maple leaves, mountains,

Dots and spots;

All will get their chance to sheath

Themselves upon my gnarly feet.

Lucky things.

*

And of all the fates bestowed the fox

The fact that he is on my socks

Must surely be an accolade

That every creature Nature made

Would want to have beside their name

In Ma Nature's Great Sock Hall of Fame.

"Behold! The sock applauded dearly

By Rachel Deeming nice and early,

Sitting at her kitchen counter

Musing on the socks that bound her

Autumn feet and kept them warm,

Adorned majestically by the form

Of Mother Nature's favourite red,

The fox: a beast, it's often said,

Has cunning, and a wily trait

That people often love to hate

But Rachel shows that Mr. Fox

Is fantastic found upon your socks."

*

I think the love I have for these

Stems mainly from their featured theme

But also from the fact this time

The theme and object nicely rhymes.

*

And so, my everyday life continues to provide me with the most unusual inspiration. This morning, whilst getting dressed and having chosen my socks at random from the drawer, I gave them a closer inspection and realised that they were my "fox socks" and how much I love them. Why not write a poem about socks whilst eating your muesli and having a nice cuppa?

It seemed right to write.

This is so much fun. I just love it!

  • This is cute and relatable. As a Florida boy I too love my flip flops, but, there do come those days when shoes, woe unto me, are necessary… So, we pull out the trusty socks and with Batman, Superman, or a nicely smiling dog, we adorn our trusting feet.

Slices of watermelon on a light blue and red spotted background for me today. I like the fox better.
