one and the same; shadow & light

The dawn pursues the night across the skies,

yet never may they linger, hand in hand;

her golden gaze fades when the darkness dies,

and he retreats, a ghost the stars command.

*

She yearns to kiss the coolness of his breath,

but every touch dissolves in morning’s frame;

their union cursed, a courtship doomed to death,

two lovers bound, yet nameless in their shame.

*

Still, shadows crave the radiance they shun,

and light, though sovereign, longs for shade’s embrace.

In secret, their fleeting hearts are one,

before the turning heavens break their grace.

*

Thus, fated hearts must ache, yet never meet:

a passion scorched, a warmth incomplete.
