A sonnet of forbidden love

You were the dawn, I darkness at the gate,
Our hearts conspired where heaven drew its line,

The stars bore witness to our tangled fate,
Your light was lost, yet still it once was mine.

I hold your shadow, warm against the cold,
A ghost of flame that neither time can still.

Forbidden love, a tale the fates foretold,
Yet memory bends the laws of heaven’s will.

What lives in dream defies both night and day,
Though waking hours condemn what should not be.

Your absence shapes the path I walk away,
Yet binds me closer in eternity.

So myth and memory together flow,
A love long ended, yet it will not go.
