A happy smile that greets us at the door

Though patiently waiting, they exuberantly wag their tails, hitting the floor

Daily play and exercise to keep us from getting bored

Always willing to share the moment, of our company they want more

As a child my neighbor and best friend had a dog that was large

The rottweiler was a behemoth, the size of a barge

We’d ride him like a war horse, as generals or sergeants, as a Sarge

He’d follow us everywhere, we’d always take charge

My parents recall a time when I ran to him, he was chained

I just got new Hot Wheels, my parents knew what was running in my brain

They said that I was tackled by the beast larger than me, like I was struck by a train

Yet, I don’t recall that moment or feeling any pain

A dog from one of my uncle’s was always happy and shared her care

She comforted me when I slept, and helped with the nightmares

She followed me around the house, she followed me almost everywhere

My snacks and treats, I would give her pieces, I would share

Another dog was beautiful, for she was an Irish Setter

She would melt like butter whenever I would pet her

She loved belly rubs, laying in the sun, but she’s now somewhere better

She always enjoyed belly rubs on sun shiny days, on happy weather

I remember volunteering at the animal shelter for a summer

I helped to liven the days of many animals, make sure their days were not bummers

I helped a lot of dogs get plenty of exercise, since I was a runner

Running fartleks around the building. Presenting each pet proudly, as a stunner.

I have never had a pet dog myself, but one day I hope I will

I read books about them a lot as a child, I could never seem to get my fill

Happy dogs can be like good medicine, they’re like a fluffy, furry, Advil

I’ve always dreamed of having a pet Doberman and naming it Baskerville

By Jorge Rosales on Unsplash

A lot of pet dogs have made me happy in this life and me in theirs

We got to exercise and play, and even take naps in the same chairs

I helped a few find their forever homes, places with endless cares
